History of an Easter hymn.
In spite of their differing temperaments, brothers John and Charles Wesley did many things together. At Oxford they formed the ‘Holy Club’ and earned the name ‘Methodist’; in Georgia they were none-too-successful missionaries; in London 1738 they each found the experience that brought them peace with God.
They also published hymnbooks together. Although no one is quite sure which of the brothers wrote this hymn, Charles, who wrote nearly 7,000 new songs of praise to God, usually gets the credit.
And can it be that I should gain
An interest in the Saviour’s blood?
Died he for me, who caused his pain?
For me, who him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be
That thou, my God, shouldst die for me!
