Christchurch Blacklands Centenary book

I have been contacted by someone with family connections to George and Alfred Hodges. George was a vicar of St Andrews and Alfred was curate and then vicar of Blacklands from 1878-1909. The gentleman who has made contact is interested in locating memorials and pictures of these incumbents. I have located an old memorial window dedicated to George Hodges which was originally in St Andrews church and is now in a poor state in our schoolroom attic. There are also old memorial tablets to Alfred and his wife Lucy in the church cellar. Does anyone know of the existence of any further memorials? Also does anyone have a copy of Richard Ralph’s book “Christchurch Blacklands, 1881-1981” which is no longer required? The gentleman concerned would love get hold of a copy. Can you help?

Paul Cabban.

Parish Group

The December meeting of the Blacklands Parish Group was a social evening of horse racing. Six horses raced down the “ turf” in the middle of the church hall encouraged by members who had been saving up their 10p’s in order to have a little flutter. Seasonal nibbles and mulled wine were provided and helped to introduce a bit of Christmas cheer.

We were all very grateful for the organisation of the evening by Bill and Linda Burrows, and the loan of the horses and “turf” by Alexandra Court.

The next meeting will be on Monday January 21st when we will have a talk by Jane Nunn on her “Maritime Curiosities”.

Melodians Concert at Blacklands Church on Friday 30th November

Over a hundred people braved the cold weather to attend the 2nd Melodians concert to be held at Blacklands Church. They were not disappointed and a very enjoyable and entertaining time was had by all. The concert was put on by the St Helens Residents Association who very kindly donated half the income from the entrance fee to the church. Thanks must also be extended to Linda and Bill Burrows who held a raffle and donated the proceeds of £119 to go towards the parish contribution.

As usual in their concerts, the Melodians held a retiring collection and £225 was raised for St Michaels Hospice

Hi Everyone,

Thank you again for the wonderful warm welcome you gave the Melodians on Saturday. I thought you might like to know that we raised £225 in the collection for the Hospice.

The Church Flower Rota.

There are still empty places on the Church Flower rota. If you would be able to help, this means that once a year you would supply flowers to be arranged by you or we will give you help with this, many in the past have done this in memory of a loved one. Please put your name on the list on the notice board in the Baptistry if you could help.

Thank you for all the Poinsettias at Christmas

Many thanks to those who came and enhanced our lovely church with floral contributions for the Christmas Festival. The tree certainly looked very splendid.

Hastings Food Bank News

The Hastings foodbank seems to be getting busier week by week and we are now feeding about 50 people each week. Up to 20th November we have distributed 1039kg of food this month alone and have received donations totalling 627kg, which means we have given out 412kg more than we have received!

This has resulted in severe shortages of mashed potatoes, fruit juice, milk and sugar(500grm).

Please say a big thank you to your congregations from the foodbank team as with their help and the help of the generous people of Hastings we have, since our launch in April, been able to provide food to 646 people who would otherwise have gone without.

On behalf of the foodbank

Love in a Box

Dear Jean and all who contributed to the Love in a Box Project

I wanted to write and thank you and the entire congregation at Blacklands Church for the very kind donation of £225.00 which we received today.

Special thanks to the Sunday School who did a great job packing the boxes.

Our charity could not help as many disadvantaged children if it were not for kind, considerate and supportive people like the congregation at Blacklands Church.

Thanks once again for your kind and wonderful support it really is much appreciated by us all at Mustard Seed.

With Kind Regards

Lisa Smart (Director)
