The history of a hymn
“WHO WOULD TRUE VALOUR SEE”
Spurred on by the example of Christian in John Bunyan’s The Pilgrims Progress, Mr Valiant-for-Truth had set out from the City of destruction to the Celestial city.
Along the way he launches into “Who would true valour see…..”
Now a classic of English literature, Bunyan’s allegory of a Christian’s spiritual pilgrimage was written while he was imprisoned in Bedford jail. He was persecuted for his faith and his preaching, but though his voice was silenced for a while, his pen was not.
John Bunyan (1628-88)
The Melodians Concert
On Saturday 11th March, Blacklands Church was host to a concert featuring the Melodians Choir. This was the first time that The Melodians have sung at our church and we are grateful to the St Helens Residents Association for organising this.
The concert was electrifying, wonderful to listen to and the programme contained something for everyone. It was lovely to hear our organ played as part of the programme.
The good news is that The Melodians are back at Blacklands Church on Friday 30th November when they will be holding a Christmas Concert, once again thanks to the St. Helens Residents Association, so put this date in your diary and support this talented group of people.
Thank you to the Melodians for the £50 donation to Blacklands.
This is a message from Stephen Page who is one of the organists who occasionally plays for us on a Sunday:-

GRANDCHILD
WHAT IS A GRANDCHILD?
WELL YOU MAY ASK!
IT’S A SONG IN THE HEART,
AND AN UNDONE TASK.
ITS AN ACHE IN THE BACK
AND SWINGS IN THE PARK
CRUMBS ON THE FLOOR
AND A CRY IN THE DARK.
ITS KITTENS, TADPOLES
AND LEGO AND SNAP
SCISSORS AND PASTE
A SQUIRM IN YOUR LAP
A QUIVERING LIP
AND A HOT CLUTCHING HAND
A STAKE IN THE FUTURE
THE HOPE OF OUR LAND.
And Finally
