It’s Shoe Box time again!!

The Mustard Seed Shoe Box will be appearing at the back of the church soon and we are appealing for the usual donations in order to pack shoe boxes ready to send them to deprived children in Eastern Europe. Just to remind everyone we desperately need the following items:-

Toy cars, balls, small jigsaw puzzles, soft sweets, crayons, pencils, soft toys, flannels, toothpaste, hairbrush, comb, hats, gloves, dolls, skipping ropes, jewellery, playing cards, felt tip pens, paper, yoyo, marbles, travel games, juggling balls, baseball caps, geometry set, note book, biro, hair accessories, make up, perfume stick, talc, deodorant, shoe boxes and wrapping paper.

The folk at Blacklands have always been generous with their donations. Last year we gave 96 boxes and we are aiming to donate over 100 boxes this year.

Book Review: The Heavenly Man. The Remarkable Story of Chinese Christian Brother Yun

This is the autobiography of a man who, as a half starved poverty struck 16 year old living in a remote village in a Chinese province dedicated his life to Jesus Christ. The next 30 years consisted of beatings, torture, imprisonment and humiliation as he refused to stop witnessing for Christ.

Yun worked tirelessly to promote the Gospel in his native land. 30 years ago there were few Christians in China and now, thanks to the work of people like Yun and his Christian brothers there is now an estimated 60 million Christians in China.

This is not a depressing book, it is inspirational and thought provoking. As one reviewer said ‘You will begin reading The Heavenly Man on your couch, but you will finish it on your knees’. It will put our difficulties in proportion and we must be grateful that we live in a country where we are able to worship freely.

Hot News!

Replacement of our central heating boiler has commenced. After months of negotiating with the insurance company, getting planning permission from the local council (needed due to the church being a grade 2* listed building) and obtaining a faculty waiver from the Chichester Diocesan Registrar work has actually started. The rear vestry corridor has been tidied and given a coat of paint prior to the installation there of the new boiler, where it will not be subjected to the threat of flooding in the cellar below. Hopefully all the work will be completed in good time before the return of the cold weather.

Praying at Blacklands

The PCC at Blacklands feel that it is essential that we as a congregation pray together on a regular basis. All are welcomed to the Blacklands Prayer Group meetings held on alternate Fridays at 3.00 p.m. The next meeting will be on 13th September, but at 4:15 p.m., as we have a Heritage Open Day until 4:00 p.m. Many folk find that it is difficult for them attend at this time so we are thinking of starting an evening prayer meeting as well. If anyone would like to start a prayer group in the evening or join us if we start one, please see David or Jean and discuss the most convenient evening and times that will suit you.

Parish Group

The new term for the Parish Group starts on Monday 16th September when we hold our AGM followed by a short light hearted quiz. There is no charge for this meeting. One of the main items for the AGM is the election of officers and committee so please consider whether you would like to be nominated or wish to nominate someone else.

Annual membership fees will be due and can be paid at the meeting. Fees are the same as last year at £4 and then £2 per meeting. A full programme of talks and demonstrations for 2013/14 has been arranged and copies will be available at the AGM.
