Flaming June Was Very Often a Damp Squib.

SO THE MET OFFICE schedules a meeting about the weather (what else would they have meetings about: the tea rota?). Apparently it’s now so aberrant it deserves emergency conferences. I’m not convinced. Take flaming June for example. In June 1663 Samuel Pepys noted “weather wet for two or three months together, beyond belief”. In 1675 the average June temperature was 11.5C. The longest period of continuous rain ever recorded in the UK (58) hours fell in June in 1903. The Diamond Jubilee celebrations (Victoria’s not Elizabeth’s) were thundery. In 1953 Coronation street parties in London’s East End were marred by “drenching rain” and “cold wind”.

It’s what meteorologists used to call “characteristically variable” though now they prefer the more alarmist “climate change”.
