JUDGING AT CRUFTS MARCH 2013
I have been judging Terrier and Hound pedigree dogs and bitches for some 30 years and to be asked by the Kennel Club to Judge Skye terriers at the World famous Crufts Dog show was both a privilege and an honour. This show is held at the NEC Birmingham and over 4 days some 20,000 dogs and bitches from all the breeds were entered. To enable a dog or bitch to be entered it must have qualified at another Championship show during the previous year.
I carried out this Judging on Thursday 7th March and thought it might be of interest to explain to you how the judging system operates.
In advance of the show you are informed of the numbers to be judged in the various classes, but definitely no details of the dogs or their owners.
On the day the dogs and bitches are judged in a number of various classes depending on age and previous winnings. The dogs are judged first and the winner of each of the classes then compete against each other for the award of Best Dog, Reserve Best Dog and Best Puppy.
Then the same process applies to the bitches, which is then followed by the judging of the Best Dog and Best Bitch to determine the Best of Breed (BOB).
My BOB Skye Terrier later on the day then competed against 25 other Terrier BOB’s, this under a different judge, and was delighted that it beat the other 25 and was announced Terrier Group winner, this then qualified it to challenge with all the other Hound, Gundog, Working, Toy, Utility and Pastoral Group winners on the Sunday evening for the title of Best in Show which was screened live on Channel 4. To see my BOB in the final seven from an entry of over 20,000 was both a pleasure and rewarding, unfortunately it did not win Best in Show but put a fine performance and looked good.

Walk with Grandma.
I like to walk with Grandma
Her steps are short like mine
She doesn’t say “now hurry up”
She always takes her time.
I like to walk with Grandma
Her eyes see things like mine do
Wee pebbles bright, a funny cloud
Half hidden drops of dew.
Most people have to hurry
They do not stop to see
I’m glad that God made Grandma
Unrushed and young like me.
My recipe for life
The five most important words are: “I am proud of you”
The four most important words: “What is your opinion”
The three most important: “If you please”
The two most important: “Thank you”
And the least important of all: “I”

History of a Hymn.
For families, individuals and whole congregations, hymns are a special way of expressing Christian faith and worship. They bring comfort in the midst of difficulties and echo shared joys at times of celebration.
All People That on Earth Do Dwell
Some may remember the city of Geneva for holidays among lake and mountain scenery; others think of the United Nations and international diplomacy. It has also come to stand for the religious tradition of the Puritans, and the historic ‘Geneva Bible’. Even in the sixteenth century, Geneva was a great ‘united nations’ of refugees fleeing from religious persecution.Among them was Scotsman William Kethe, who shared in translating the Bible and wrote this enduring hymn, based on Psalm 100. Its famous tune, written by a Frenchman, is known as the ‘Old Hundredth’.
All people that on earth do dwell,
Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice;
Him serve with fear, his praise forth tell,
Come ye before him, and rejoice.
