The History of a hymn

Glory to Thee My God, This Night.

Thomas Ken wrote these words for the boys of Winchester College. He felt he had to cross swords with three kings of England on matters of principle.

He refused to put his house at the disposal of Nell Gwyn, mistress of Charles 11, during a royal visit. He resisted James 11 to the point of being imprisoned in the Tower of London. And when William and Mary came to the throne, he would not take the Oath of Allegiance. Because he considered that his oath to the exiled James still held good, he was deprived of his position in the church and in public life.

Glory to thee, my God, this night

For all the blessings of the light;

Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,

Under thy own almighty wings.

Unity Service at St Matthews: Sunday 27th Jan 4:00 pm.

"People may have old Christian Books or Bibles that they would be very glad to pass on. They are welcome to bring them along to the unity service and a brother, Richard Smart, will take them away as he ships a lot of books and Bibles to Uganda. Do pass this on to people in your church so that they can take the opportunity to bring along any books or Bibles that they may be glad to pass on to Christians in Uganda. Many thanks."

Richards lives at 120 Bohemia Road - 01424 422297, so people can phone him if they were unable to get along to the service.

God bless you.
