A £5 note was chatting to a pound coin. The pound asked the £5 note if it had been having a good time lately. The note said ”Yes I went to town and bought a newspaper and had one of those posh cups of coffee that are so popular at the moment. How about you”?

“No just church”

Once in Royal David’s City

For millions of radio listeners all over the world, Christmas begins with the clear treble voice of a Cambridge choirboy.

Every year since 1919, this has been the opening hymn in the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols from King’s College Chapel on Christmas Eve, broadcast since 1928 on BBC Radio.

It comes from the 1848 collection by Mrs Alexander, written to illustrate the words from the Apostles’ Creed:

‘…..born of the Virgin Mary’

Once in royal David’s city,

Stood a lowly cattle-shed,

Where a mother laid her baby

In a manger for his bed.

Mary was that mother mild,

Jesus Christ her little child.
