Welcome to Christ Church, Blacklands & St. Andrew, Laton Road, Hastings

On the evening of Monday, 18th June, Ken Nunn was our Guest Speaker and he entertained us by firstly bringing some of his antiques and telling us the stories behind them and then by looking at antique items brought in by the members. He was able to give information as to what the items actually were and also an indication of their value. There was a great interest shown by the audience and quite a lot of excitement especially if it was found that the value was a little more than expected. A bit like the ‘Antique Roadshow’ without a TV licence! On several items, such as very old books and some medals, Ken took details and is going to consult either an expert or, in the case of medals, look up the military record of the recipient, as this could have a direct bearing on the value. He will then advise the person who brought the item or items. I, for one, found that a First World War bayonet I have, which I believed to be French, was actually a German machine gunner’s bayonet! The bayonet, of course, didn’t fit on the machine gun but on the gunner’s rifle, which was shorter than the ordinary rifle. The meeting was very well supported and the comments heard after were positive, especially those who said ‘Please book him again next year!’ And we will!

Summer Outing

The Outing is on the 23rd July.   It is a full day, the coach leaving from the Church at 11.00am.   We are going to Michelham Priory, then on to Berwick Church, followed by an evening meal at The Moorings in Pevensey Bay.  Non-Members would be welcome at £30 each, which includes the evening meal. However, time is getting short and places limited, so please contact Michael (01424 429179) or any Committee Member as soon as possible. Not to be missed!
